Yesterday, author Kate Buford commented in The Readex Blog about the research value of historical newspapers. Buford said, “I sure wish the ever-expanding resource of digitized historical newspaper archives had been available in its present form to draw on in 2002 when I started the research for Native American Son.” Native American Son is the first comprehensive biography of the legendary Jim Thorpe, arguably the greatest all-around athlete in U.S. history. An environmentalist and the future of the electric car

Earlier this week Ozzie Zehner, author of Green Illusions, voiced his opinion about the new electric Tesla SUV in the Christian Science Monitor. His belief:  Electric cars don’t make future environmental problems simply disappear. UNP author named state’s poet laureate

Kathleen Flenniken, author of Famous (2006) is now the Washington state poet laureate for 2012-2014. In a news release from Humanities Washington and the Washington State Arts Commission Flenniken said, “This is a dream job — speaking in support of the arts and humanities, and of poetry in particular, getting a chance to organize poetry events around the state, visit schools, reach kids and teachers and remote communities.” Click here to read the full story from The Seattle Times. Lithuanian ambassador to the United States Žygimantas Pavilionis met with Ellen Cassedy, the author of the new UNP book, We are Here. Grace Abbott remembered

Grace Abbott (1878–1939), was a tireless and brilliant social reformer in the early twentieth century who contributed to the development of social programs that safeguarded mothers and children, protected immigrants from abuse, and rescued child laborers from the appalling conditions of the time.
