Linking in Lincoln: October 30,2008

Wink
New this month from the University of Nebraska Press is The Wink of the Zenith: The Shaping of a Writer’s Life by Floyd Skloot. At forty one, writer Floyd Skloot, was struck with a “brain-ravaging virus” and this was the topic of his first three memoirs. In Wink, however, he tries to uncover where the “magic comes from”, and how “circumstance and nature” came together to make him the writer that he is. This week Linking in Lincoln will do our part to help uncover that as well.  Just what makes up Floyd Skloot? Join me, and we can find out reader!

1.   Well first off, let’s start with the Floyd Skloot biography. You can find it at Floydskloot.com

2.   “In broad terms, the zenith is the direction pointing directly above a particular location”. Find out more at Wikipedia.com

3.    Bill Payne is one of the founding members of the band Little Feat and one of the finest American rock and blues pianist. Check out youtube.com for his take on how influences in life shape art and the artist.

4.    Now I’m confident that this is not the way Mr. Skloot went about it, but if you wanted to write your own memoir you could (and should) check out teacher.scholastic.com for a step by step guide.

5.    Floyd Skloot’s memoir In the Shadow of Memory was a finalist of the 2003 Barnes & Noble Discover Great New Writers Award for Nonfiction. Check out the seasonal picks here.

Ok readers, I hoped this helped uncover a little more of Floyd Skloot and perhaps started you on your way to telling your own life story.  Be sure to head to the University of Nebraska Press website for The Wink of the Zenith and check back tomorrow for This Week in History.
