UNP author subject of new documentary, The Last Survivor, plus two new sales

The Road to Auschwitz University of Nebraska Press author Hedi Fried is one of four genocide survivors profiled in the documentary, The Last Survivor, which will be screened at the Dallas International Film Festival today.

The Last Survivor profiles Fried, a survivor of the Holocaust, as well as survivors of genocides in Darfur, Congo and Rwanda. All four have worked through the horrific things they experienced in part by becoming active in genocide prevention and education efforts. The film has garnered rave reviews, including several awards from the Oxford Film Festival.

Fried is the author of The Road to Auschwitz, which the University of Nebraska Press published in 1996. She has said she was driven to write her memoir after her husband, also a Holocaust survivor, died when Fried was just 40.

The film will be screened elsewhere throughout April (which is also Genocide Prevention Month). Dates and venues are listed on the film Web site.

April is also National Poetry Month, and to celebrate, the University of Nebraska Press has placed several titles on sale, including several titles by former U.S. Poet Laureate Ted Kooser and the award-winning Taste of Cherry, by Kara Candito. A complete list is on our Web site.

We have one other sale in the works right now, as well. Select Native studies titles are on sale through May 10. These titles include a cookbook, the biography of a Native American baseball star, and a collection of essays exploring the role Native American women play in keeping Native culture alive in urban areas. The full list is here.
