Author, Teammates to be inducted into Basketball Hall of Fame

Oscar Robertson Author Oscar Robertson will be making another trip to the Basketball Hall of Fame, this time to be inducted with his Olympic teammates.  In a recent New York Times article, Robertson writes about the 1960 Olympic gold medal winning basketball team that he co-captained, a team he calls “the original Dream Team.”  He credits coach Pete Newel (subject of A Good Man: The Pete Newell Story by Bruce Jenkins) for helping the team of college athletes beat the establishment, the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU), and for the first time change how American basketball was represented abroad.  The team will be inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame this Friday, August 13th, alongside the 1992 gold medal winning Dream Team.
Robertson’s book The Big O: My Life, My Times, My Game traces his rise as one of the best basketball players in history, while also tracing the evolution of the NBA.  Robertson traces his unlikely trajectory, from his childhood in a segregated city to playing on a championship team (the Milwaukee Bucks) and serving as president of the National Basketball Players Association.  Robertson was a trailblazer off the court, as well, winning a six year legal battle against the NBA, and bringing an end to the clause that bound players to a single team during their careers.  To have the book by the basketball legend, you can preorder Robertson’s book now on our web site.
