Today was day one of Book Expo America, and it was a good day for the University of Nebraska Press.
It's always wonderful to meet UNP authors. We got to catch up with Steve Steinberg, who along with Lyle Spatz is the author of 1921. Steve and Lyle will read from and sign copies of 1921 tomorrow (Wednesday night) at Steuben's flagship store, 667 Madison Ave., in New York from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. A crystal store is an unusual venue for a baseball book event, and we are excited to attend.
We also got to see Terese Svoboda, whose new novel, Bohemian Girl, will be published by the University of Nebraska Press in September. Terese is also the author behind an intriguing poster at our booth, which asks the question, "Why is Willa Worried?" (Willa, of course, being Willa Cather). Want to know the answer? Stop by our booth (no. 2546), and scan the poster with your iPhone (download the barcode app first).
And finally, we met Karol Nielsen, the author of Black Elephants, which we'll publish in October. Black Elephants, a memoir of a cross-cultural relationship set against the backdrop of the first Gulf War, is one of the books that we're giving away to BEA attendees, so be sure to stop by our booth and pick up a copy.
We also gave away a lot of books and a lot of tote bags, met with reviewers, librarians and other fans of UNP books, and had the opportunity to meet Venus and Serena Williams' former tennis coach. Stay tuned for more updates, and for photos, too!
