UNP has contributed to the archeology field by publishing books that explore past cultures and excavate histories previously unknown.

The Archeology of the Caddo edited by Timothy K. Perttula provides the most comprehensive overview to date of the prehistory and archaeology of the Caddo peoples. The Caddos lived in the Southeastern Woodlands for more than 900 years beginning around A.D. 800–900, before being forced to relocate to Oklahoma in 1859. This volume reintroduces the Caddos’ heritage, creativity, and political and religious complexity.

 

 

Ronald M. James’, Virginia City: Secrets of a Western Past shows how every detail—from unearthed artifacts to reports of local saloons to plans for the cemetery to surviving nineteenth-century buildings—adds to our view of Virginia City, a mining boomtown in Nevada in the 1860s and 1870s, when it was one of the richest places on earth.

 

 

 

On the Edge of Purgatory is an historical and archaeological study of the Hispanic presence in southeastern Colorado over the past five hundred years. Author Bonnie J. Clark investigates the unwritten history of this unique Hispanic population. Combining archaeological research, contemporary ethnography, and oral and documentary history, Clark examines the everyday lives of this population over time.
