One of the best mystifiers in America.
Gertrude Stein
On this day in 1899, “First Lady of Mystery” Mignon Good Eberhart was born in Lincoln, Nebraska. She had a long career, spanning sixty years, that brought her the Grand Masters Edgar Award from the Mystery Writers of America in 1971. Author of 59 novels and numerous short stories, Eberhart was a master of crafting suspense by infusing a sense of place and a wide-ranging cast of characters. “She has the best sense of interiors,” praised Gertrude Stein.
Mignon G. Eberhart’s novels took place both in Nebraska and in stunning locales, featuring murderers and murderesses alike. Her book, The Mystery of Hunting’s End (Bison Books, 1998) was chosen as the One Book One Nebraska pick of 2023. “This is a book that keeps the reader guessing as to who is behind the murders taking place in a lodge outside of Valentine during a blizzard,” writes the Nebraska Center of the Book.
You can learn more about who Mignon G. Eberhart was, both as a writer and a person from Carson Vaughan’s recent story on Eberhart for Flatwater Free Press. Or you can listen to Mignon G. Eberhart’s biographer, Rick Cypert, give an introduction to her life and work for the Nebraska Library Commission.
“An observer, Mignon Eberhart sought to reflect human behavior, refined and vulgar, that she found in the world around her,” Rick Cypert says. With any one of our limited-time Bison editions of Eberhart’s work, you can re-enter the world as she saw it. You’ll be in for a great mystery when you do!
