October Staff Reading List

UNP staff members are always reading new books, both within our list and outside of what we publish. Here are some of the titles where our noses have been buried.

“I’ve been rereading Bram Stoker’s Dracula this month to get in on the Halloween spirit with a classic work of gothic fiction. I’ve also been alternating between Safiya Sinclair’s poetry collection, Cannibal, and her newly published memoir, How to Say Babylon. I highly recommend both of her works if you don’t already have them on your list!” -Sarah Kee

“I’m so glad that I finally picked up Deer Season by Erin Flanagan. This book takes great care in setting its scenes. I’m not always a fan of mystery novels, but the community connections and character development really make this story shine.” -Lacey Losh

“My spooky autumn reading continues! I’ve been simultaneously reading The Bloody Chamber by Angela Carter, a collection of gothic short story retellings of classic fairy tales, and Anthony Horowitz’s Magpie Murders, the first in a series about an editor who finds one of her authors dead after reading his latest unpublished work.” -Taylor Martin

“I’ve just started Agatha Christie’s Murder on the Orient Express, a timeless classic that I chose for want of a cozy murder mystery! Death on the Nile was excellent, so I am excited to backtrack on her impressive list of famous works that are gaining popularity again.” -Taylor Gilreath

“I’m currently re-visiting My Omaha Obsession by Miss Cassette. The detective nature of it makes it feel suitable for spooky season.” -Erica Corwin

“I read I Would Meet You Anywhere by Susan Kiyo Ito as a manuscript to design its cover, but once I received my copy, I got to fully read it to the end. This reflection on living as an adoptee, reconciling one’s cultural and biological identity, and finding family, gave me a new appreciation for what that means in my own, especially when reading parallels of the stories I’ve heard from my cousins who experienced similar journeys.” -Nathan Putens

“This month, I was inspired by our Books That Haunt reading list and got my hands on a copy of Deer Season by Erin Flanagan. I hadn’t originally meant to dive into this book, but the arresting opening scene of a couple vaccinating their pigs and the cast of varied characters kept me hooked.” -Rebecca Jefferson
