Each year, the National Book Critics Circle presents awards for the finest books published in English in six categories: Fiction, Nonfiction, Biography, Autobiography, Poetry, and Criticism.

2024 Illumination Book Awards

Butterfly Nebula (Backwaters Press, 2023) by Laura Reece Hogan was awarded a Gold Medal in Poetry.

2024 Spur Awards

Western Writers of America annually honors writers for distinguished writing about the American West with the Spur Awards.

Continental Reckoning (Nebraska, 2023) by Elliott West is the winner in the Best Western Historical Nonfiction category.

The First Migrants (Bison Books, 2023) by Richard Edwards and Jacob K. Friefeld is a finalist in the Best Western Historical Nonfiction category.

Oracle of Lost Causes (Bison Books, 2023) by Matthew Christopher Hulbert is a finalist in the Best Western Biography category.

Hugh J. Silverman Book Prize in Philosophy and Literature

Who Would You Kill to Save the World (Nebraska, 2023) by Claire Colebrook was named the inaugural winner of the Hugh J. Silverman Book Prize in Philosophy and Literature. It is awarded to cutting-edge books that productively explore the space where philosophy and literary studies intersect.

2024 Betty Berzon Emerging Writer Award

Forget I Told You This (Nebraska, 2023) by Hilary Zaid won the Betty Berzon Emerging Writer Award sponsored by The Publishing Triangle. This award is given to LGBTQ+ writers who have shown exceptional talent and potential for continued literary success and significance in the future.

The Paterson Prize

Ted Kooser (Nebraska, 2023) by Carla Ketner is a co-winner for the 2024 Paterson Prize for Books for Young People.

Let Our Bodies Change the Subject (Nebraska, 2023) by Jared Harél is a finalist for the 2024 Paterson Poetry Prize.

2024 Social Justice Advocacy Titles

The Incarceration of Native American Women (Nebraska, 2023) by Carma Corcoran was included on In the Margin Book Award’s 2024 Social Justice Recommendation List.

Society of Midland Authors Awards

The Society of Midlands Authors Awards honor books by Midwestern authors published in the categories of adult fiction and nonfiction, history, biography and memoir, poetry, and children’s fiction and nonfiction. Winners will be announced in mid-April.

Ted Kooser (Nebraska, 2023) by Carla Ketner is a semi-finalist for the 2024 Children’s Reading Roundtable Award for Children’s Nonfiction.

Without Warning (Bison Books, 2023) by Jim Minick is a semi-finalist for the Society of Midland Authors Award in the History Category.
