July Staff Reading List

UNP staff members are always reading new books, both within our list and outside of what we publish. Here are some of the titles where our noses have been buried.

“This month I’ve been reading Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility and Bury Your Gays by Chuck Tingle. Bury Your Gays follows Misha, a scriptwriter, as he’s pressured by producers to kill off a gay character in his show’s upcoming season finale ‘for the algorithm’ and finds himself haunted by past mistakes. As much of a scaredy-cat as I can be with horror, I’ve been enjoying the book so far!” -Sarah Kee

“I just finished reading a double volume of James Herriot’s All Creatures Great and Small and All Things Bright and Beautiful. When the world is a complicated and sometimes scary place, it feels good to read something gentle, funny, and life-affirming.” -Joyce Gettman

“I’m just finishing Lula Dean’s Little Library of Banned Books by Kirsten Miller. The setting of this story is a small Southern town divided (as much of the US is) by hate crimes, book banning, and discrimination. It follows several generations of characters and their perspectives on these topics. This novel presents difficult subject matter in an almost breezy format, but that doesn’t diminish its message. I love how readable and heartwarming this story is.” -Lacey Losh

“In my efforts to escape political reality, I am reading the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series by Rick Riordan. I’m currently on book four, The Battle of the Labyrinth, and plan to watch the newer television series afterward. This also helps my quest to read every book I have in my house, even though that number keeps growing!” -Rosemary Sekora

“I’ve just finished Under the Banner of Heaven by Jon Krakauer, which is the third book of his I’ve read. After recently reading his memoir of the Mount Everest 1996 disaster, where eight climbers were killed in a sudden storm on top of the mountain, and his retelling of Chris McCandless’s tragic death in the wilds of Alaska, I was interested to see what other books he’s put out beyond wilderness non-fiction.” -Taylor Martin
