UNP staff members are always reading new books, both within our list and outside of what we publish. Here are some of the books we gifted to loved ones this holiday season or are planning to read in the new year!

“This year I am gifting my dad a copy of Rick Gosselin’s The Team That History Forgot since he’s a big Kansas City Chiefs fan. I’m currently rereading Emily Henry’s People We Meet on Vacation, which follows Alex and Poppy on one last vacation to fix their relationship, to prepare for the film releasing on Netflix next month.” -Sarah Kee
“My mother-in-law loves historical fiction and hasn’t been introduced to Kristin Hannah, so I will be gifting her The Nightingale. It’s a heartbreaking novel that follows two French sisters who take very different paths in the midst of World War II. One must endure the Nazi occupation of their village with her young daughter, while the other joins the Resistance and risks her life smuggling injured soldiers to safety over the Pyrenees Mountains. I will be first in line when the film comes out in 2027 with Dakota and Elle Fanning.” -Taylor Gilreath
“This year I’m giving my partner Race and Resistance in Boston: A Contested Sports History, edited by Robert Cvornyek and Douglas Stark, as well as Get Your Tokens Ready: The Late 1990s Road to the Subway Series by Chris Donnelly. He’s a fan of sports (especially baseball) and sports history, and needless to say, UNP’s extensive sports list has made my gift-giving quite easy. Meanwhile, I’m planning to read An Alternative Irish Christmas, published by Tramp Press, to get into the holiday spirit.” -Katrina Vassallo
“The Correspondent by Virginia Evans is a novel written in letters. It’s a contemporary story of the largely antiquated practice of staying connected through the mail. I love the frequent postscripts in the letters, detailing what the different characters are currently reading. While the book spans years, and it isn’t set in a particular season, the story evokes winter.” -Lacey Losh
“Over our holiday break I hope to read The Windward Shore: A Winter on the Great Lakes by Jerry Dennis. I found this on a display at my library dedicated to winter-themed books. Since it’s winter and I live near Lake Michigan, I figured it would be fitting!” -Madison Wigley
“I am excited to give my dad a copy of Chris Donnelly’s Get Your Tokens Ready: The Late 1990s Road to the Subway Series. It’s the third book in Donnelly’s unofficial New York baseball history trilogy and will look excellent on the shelf next to the other two volumes.” -Rosemary Sekora
