nto That Silent Sea: Trailblazers of the Space Era, 1961-1965 by Francis French and Colin Burgess is coming out this month and I can barely contain myself. It isn’t science fiction, but it science and lots of sf is based in space. I don’t need to justify mentioning it to you all just because I am obsessed with space travel and astronauts. Honest, I don’t. I just wanted to point it out in case anyone else is as geeky as I am. So I did. I am sooooo excited.
This is Francis, one of the authors of that book. I am very pleased to hear that you are so excited about the book, and now that it is out I hope you are enjoying it! I grew up reading a lot of science fiction, and it was wonderful to interview the spacefarers who turned those dreams into reality for humankind. Underneath the technology, early human spaceflight is a VERY human story, and I hope you’ll enjoy the tales we were able to discover and share.
I am reading the book right now – its a very very good read
Very pleased to hear that! You’ll probably also then be interested in the followup book coming out from UNP this fall, “In the Shadow of the Moon”:
http://www.nebraskapress.unl.edu/bookinfo/5223.html
– which continues the story up to the first moon landing. Many original, never-before-told tales in both books that even science fiction did not forsee!
Francis,
That is good to hear. Gives me something new to look forward to.
