The SABR convention begins tomorrow in Pittsburgh!
The Society for American Baseball Research convention, which is open to all baseball fans, includes top featured speakers from around the baseball world — front office executives, players, managers, scouts, journalists, historians, and analysts — innovative panel discussions, groundbreaking research presentations, major and minor league games, tours of historic ballparks, the SABR Trivia Contest, the Awards Luncheon, and most of all, the opportunity to make and renew baseball friendships over the course of this exciting and memorable event.
Here are a few UNP author highlights from the schedule:
Thursday, June 21
11:45 a.m. – 1:45 p.m.
SABR Director and UNP author Bill Nowlin will be available at the “How to Do Baseball Research” table in the Vendors Room to discuss SABR publications and answer questions related to SABR’s book projects.
12:15 – 12:40 p.m.
Daniel R. Levitt is presenting “From Deadball to Techball: The Evolution of Baseball Innovation.”
3:00 – 4:00 p.m.
Chris Lamb is a guest speaker on “Wendell Smith of the Pittsburgh Courier: His Life and Legacy.”
Beginning at 5:15 p.m. Rob Garratt and Andy McCue have a two-part presentation on the 60th anniversary of baseball’s move west.
Friday, June 22
9:15 – 10:15 a.m.
Curt Smith, author of The Presidents and the Pastime, will be moderating a panel on Pirates broadcasting.
Saturday, June 23
1:00 – 2:00 p.m.
Lee Lowenfish will be moderating “Branch Rickey: The Pittsburgh Pirates Years.”
And Jim Leeke, author of From the Dugouts to the Trenches, will be awarded the Larry Ritter Award and SABR Baseball Research Award. Congrats, Jim!
