Launched in 1961 as UNP’s first trade imprint, Bison Books reflects the Press’s commitment to general-interest books that appeal to the educated reader. Originally published as inexpensive paperbacks, Bisons (as they became known) quickly caught on. Notable Bison Books authors include André Breton, George Armstrong Custer, William F. Cody, Loren Eiseley, Michel Foucault, Che Guevara, Wright Morris, Tillie Olsen, Mari Sandoz, Wallace Stegner, Leo Tolstoy, Philip Wylie, Stefan Zweig; the list goes on. In 2013 Bison Books shifted its focus: while remaining a general-interest imprint, it is now home for top-notch books about the trans-Mississippi West.
